Meaning of water hardness

Water hardness is a measure of the amount of calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in water. These salts are called calcium ions and magnesium ions. Water hardness is generally expressed in French degrees (°f). So the chemical term for limestone is calcium and magnesium salts(CaCO3).
